The Patterson Insurance Agency, Farmers Insurance Group

Knowing What Matters to You the Most

Owners Courtney and Justin Patterson of the Patterson Insurance Agency, Farmers Insurance Group, know what matters to you the most with all your insurance needs. Since 1928, Farmers has been providing a wide array of insurance products. With that solid foundation, Courtney decided to establish her agency through Farmers in the summer of 2010. Shortly after obtaining her license, Courtney opened her office in The Times Building in downtown Huntsville. "I previously was working remotely with another insurance company and was looking for a company that offered excellent products and services and I found Farmers," Courtney explains. "This is a great fit for me, as well as for this area."

Farmers, based out of Los Angeles, is currently further establishing its presence in the South and along the East Coast of the country. It offers insurance for auto, homeowners, rental property, life, and business and worker’s compensation, as well as for specialty products such as RVs, four-wheelers, motorcycles, and boats. Also in the future, Courtney will be able to provide financial services, such as mutual funds and IRAs. "Farmers is a solid, financially stable company that offers a complete product line for all insurance needs, as well as excellent customer and claims services," she states.

The Patterson Insurance Agency focuses on making sure it serves its customers’ best interest. "In addition to serving our customers’ needs, we are proud to provide local service and knowledge of insurance," Courtney says. "Our goal is to inform our customers and potential customers about what insurance is all about, its benefits, and why you should be covered." After the destruction of the tornadoes on April 27, 2011, this is even more important than ever to the agency and the community.

The insurance Courtney offers helps to simplify her customers’ lives and enables them to do so with multiple discounts. Some of the discounts Farmers offers include discounts for occupational groups (Doctors, RNs, Dentists, Engineers, Teachers, Police, Firefighters, etc.), retired professionals, Homeowners, Good Students, Two or More Automobiles, New Parents, Teens, Air Bags, and more. Along with homeowner’s insurance, Famers also offers renters, condo, mobile and manufactured and specialty homes insurance, as well as earthquake and flood insurance. "Insurance can help you with your peace of mind, knowing that in the event of a covered loss, your damaged home will be rebuilt and your destroyed belongings will be replaced," Courtney states.

Farmers suite of Life insurance products are designed to help meet different life insurance needs at various stages of life, including needs of business owners. Farmers offers several Life insurance products, including Term Life, Whole Life, Universal Life, Key Person, Annuities, and more. "Whether you're a new family, empty nester, business owner, or single parent, Farmers has a Life insurance option to suit your needs and budget," Courtney says. "By preparing in advance, you'll have the peace of mind that comes from knowing you're protecting your family's financial future. And since Life insurance benefits are generally not taxable at the federal level, your loved ones can use the benefits to help take care of their living expenses in a variety of ways."

Courtney continues, "If you're a business owner or have business partners, it's important to prepare for the unexpected. Farmers offers several Life insurance products that are designed to help you, as a business owner, to make it possible for your heirs to help pay estate taxes and help sustain the business during a change in management, or to help provide funds in order to execute a buy-sell agreement between partners or stockholders."

Courtney is proud to be a part of the Huntsville community and is currently a member of the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce, National Association of Professional Women, Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Alabama, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. "My goals for our agency are to continue to grow and to better inform our community about the insurance industry," Courtney comments. "In addition, we plan to host financial education and planning seminars to increase the knowledge of insurance and financial planning…regardless if you have $5 or $500,000, everyone can benefit!"

With such a wide variety of insurance plans, Courtney Patterson and her staff know what can matter to you most. "With the Farmer’s Agency name and expertise behind us, my staff and I are looking forward to providing the Tennessee Valley with insurance that matters to you most for many, many years to come," Courtney states.

Stonecutter's Guild, The

Handcrafted Natural Stone Countertops

For more than 12 years, the residents of the Tennessee Valley have enjoyed the beauty and quality of handcrafted natural stone countertops from The Stonecutter’s Guild. Owners Chuck and Tina Martin take pride in their product and the high level of personal service provided to each of their individual homeowners and professional homebuilders. "It is our goal to make sure that each customer has a great experience throughout the entire Countertop process," Chuck says. "We know that Granite or Marble is a big investment that people make to add value to their homes. We take the time to walk you through the entire process to make sure you will be happy with the end product."

Stonecutter’s is a custom fabrication granite and marble provider. The Master craftsmen put the final touches on every piece of stone before it leaves the shop. "It is the individual fabricators who make the handcrafted difference," Chuck explains. "All of our employees have been part of the Stonecutter’s family for many years. They know the business and the right way things should be done. There are easier and faster ways, but the results are not acceptable."

According to Chuck, in today’s economic situation, customers feel as if they must make a choice between cost and quality; plus there are so many companies from which to choose. "Stonecutter’s is in one of the most competitive granite markets in the Southeast United States," Chuck states. "There are more than 30 Granite shops fabricating in the Tennessee Valley. Everywhere you look today you find granite countertops being advertised by the Big Box stores, to the flooring stores, and to the appliance stores. When a market gets this saturated, it is time for the buyer to be very aware."

Provided below are a few helpful hints from Chuck and Tina on what to ask and what to look for when shopping for your granite and marble countertops:

1) Companies advertising very low prices. $29 per square foot may be too good to be true.

• Almost all granite companies quote a price per square foot of countertop. The very low prices draw people into their stores only to find that only a few less desirable materials are at the low price, but they have you in their store and will be glad to sell up. Two pit falls to watch for:

i) Do not compare prices based on the price per square foot. Compare on the total installed price. A total installed price should expose the hidden charges.

ii) Compare the total square footage of countertop calculated by each company. They all should be very close to the same. If not, you need to know what the difference is.

2) Companies selling that do not fabricate or install.

• Many companies are promoting granite countertops, but a third party is providing the service. Who will you be dealing with during the design and selection of your materials? Which company are you signing a contract with? What company will handle any issues that occur after the installation?

3) Visit the Fabrication Shop.

• Fabricating stone is not easy nor is it cheap. By seeing their fabricating operation you will get a sense of how professionally they take their work. Although granite can be fabricated in a small garage or warehouse, quality work requires proper tooling and facilities to produce consistent work.

4) Quality of the Slabs

• All slabs start from the same place, a hole in the ground. It is what happens to them next that make the difference. Slabs are graded A,B,C. The lower grades are referred to as "seconds". Seconds are the same stone as A grade, but may have an odd spot or vein that is considered less marketable. Many of the very low priced materials are seconds.

i) Know your Stone. The company should be able to tell you about the stones from which you are choosing. How are they to be maintained? Will they need to be sealed? There are big differences between granites, marbles, and limestones.

ii) Most A-grade slabs are resin sealed, most seconds are not. If the slabs are not resin sealed, it may be necessary for you to seal your countertops more often.

iii) Feel your slabs. You should be given the opportunity to put your hands on the surface of your slabs before they are cut for your countertops. How does it feel to you? Granites are not perfectly smooth. They naturally have small pits and fissures, so ask if you have concerns.

iv) Look at the finish of the slab. Many seconds will be hazy around the edges cause by poor polishing of the slab. You do not want these areas in countertops.

5) Quality of Edgework.

• This is the most difficult element for the consumer to evaluate because most people do not know what to look for. Granite that has been polished correctly will never require re-polishing. The polishing process does not require waxes and compounds to make it shine. The stone’s surface is glazed to a glass finish that never wears off.

i) The polished finish on the edges should be as shiny as the top of the slab.

ii) Run your hand along the edge, it should be smooth top and bottom with no ripple in the finish.

iii) The edgework inside the sink cutouts should be straight up and down. The inside radius corners should be smooth and identical.

6) Check References

• Again this is a big expenditure no matter what your budget. Check references.

i) Ask company for a list of recent references.

ii) Go look at their work and quality of Installation.

iii) Better Business Bureau at http://northalabama.bbb.org/Find-Business-Reviews/matched/countertops/35801/

iv) Angie’s List at www.angieslist.com.

The Stonecutter’s Guild is a member of the Huntsville/Madison County Builders Association and has been an "A+" accredited North Alabama Better Business Bureau member since 2008. Other awards include the "Super Service Award" for 2010 from Angie’s List in the countertop category.

SUNBELT of North Alabama

The Place to Go to Buy or Sell a Business

For many local business owners, SUNBELT of North Alabama is the answer to an all important question: "What do I do when change occurs to my business: retirement, relocation, health concerns, company expansion?" The good news is SUNBELT can help.

SUNBELT is the world’s largest business brokerage firm with 250 licensed offices and more than 1,000 professionally trained brokers for non-franchise and franchise restaurants, healthcare, retail, professional services firms, manufacturing, automotive, and more. The company was founded in 1978 by Ed Pendarvis in South Carolina and since that time has expanded into 30 countries worldwide. SUNBELT of North Alabama is the local franchise, with the main office in Huntsville.

"SUNBELT is the place to go to buy or sell a business," Managing Partner Melinda Tsang states. "Our highly specialized intermediaries help business sellers capitalize on their most valued assets by converting their hard earned business equity into cash."

SUNBELT Business Brokers are intermediaries who facilitate smooth ownership transition for buyers and sellers. Their primary focus is on small (under $1 million) and medium-sized ($1-$10 million) companies.

"Confidentiality is of the utmost importance when dealing with business change," Melinda says. "If you as an owner are attempting to sell your own business, that process alone reveals that your business is going through a change. Employees, customers, suppliers, and bankers all get nervous and competitors look for an inequitable business opportunity. SUNBELT protects the identity of the company by contacting only owner approved buyers through a blind profile. Only after signing a confidentiality agreement are potential buyers given a document describing the company and revealing the company’s identity."

SERVICING SELLERS

Today, more business owners choose to sell with SUNBELT Business Brokers because:

  • It is the largest main street and lower middle market business intermediary firm in the world.

  • They have more Certified Business Intermediaries than any other firm.

  • They have more than 10,000 business-for-sale listings.

  • They have tens of thousands of registered business buyers looking for the right business.

  • SUNBELT wrote the book on how to sell your business, Selling Your Business for Dummies.

SUNBELT also offers business sellers an exit strategy, including assistance in providing a team to prepare for the sale by gathering all the financial information, determining the seller’s discretionary earnings, screening buyers in advance of any information being given, making recommendations on third-party business valuations to solidify pricing, and assembling a comprehensive list of priorities to check (i.e. the status of a lease upon the transition of owners).

SERVICING BUYERS

For a buyer, SUNBELT provides assistance in selecting the right business based on the buyer’s personal and financial interests and experience, advisement on what the buyer will need to pre-qualify for a business loan, help in understanding the cash flow characteristics and seasonality of a business, the facilitation of face-to-face meetings with the seller, and a private showing of the business.

SUNBELT helps business buyers realize their dreams of becoming independent business owners and secure their financial future. As national and regional economic changes occur locally in federal government and technology businesses, a surge of buyers are being created in the local market. Many potential buyers have an established 401K and are interested in using their investment to buy a business through an IRS approved process without a tax penalty. SUNBELT of North Alabama offers the opportunity to play a valued role at the most critical juncture of the business life cycle by facilitating smooth ownership transition.

"We assist business sellers and buyers in a very detailed process that must be handled professionally, competently, and discreetly," Melinda explains. SUNBELT maintains a high level of trust, integrity, and professionalism through its Standard of Practices and Code of Ethical Behavior. With SUNBELT, all offices are required to have one member of the International Business Brokers Association (IBBA), the official organization of Business Brokers. In the entire state of Alabama, there are six members of the IBBA, including Melinda, and she is the only member in the North Alabama region.

Melinda continues, "Our SUNBELT territory spans the nine counties of North Alabama. We have a unique opportunity to service clients because Huntsville and Madison County have a strong economy and are nationally and internationally recognized and promoted as a great place to live and own a business."

On a personal note, Melinda, along with partners Keith and Anita Jackson, and Mike and Kathy Shepard, believe strongly in the foundational Scripture of Jeremiah. 29:7 as the guiding principles for their business to regularly pray for the city, its leaders, and the success of the local business community and business owners. They collectively believe that God has blessed this land and that it’s a privilege to serve this community.

SUNBELT of North Alabama is a company you can depend on and trust. SUNBELT is the premier choice for dealing with business change.

Staff holding certification of CMSBB:

In Huntsville, SUNBELT of North Alabama attributes its success to its brokers. "All of our senior brokers are professionally trained and certified," Melinda comments. "Each holds the prestigious designation of Certified Main Street Business Broker (CMSBB). Additionally, many of the SUNBELT Brokers have experience as small business owners."

"When you purchase products from us, you instantly become a member of the Window World family," Melissa says. "Our relationship doesn’t end once the windows are installed. If there is a problem 10 years down the road, we are there for our customers." Michael adds, "When we do business with a client, we do it right. I don’t ever want anyone wearing a Window World logo to be ashamed of whom it represents."

Customer Bobby Barnett says, "I purchased windows from Window World and the installers were very courteous, cooperative, and neat in their workmanship. I would ask that you recognize them for doing an outstanding job. These gentlemen are an asset to your company and should be rewarded for their efforts in customer satisfaction. My wife and I are very pleased with our purchase and will make every effort to refer your company to others. They took the time to demonstrate every aspect of the windows, from installation, finishing, and operation. These gentlemen should be commended for a job well done. If we have future needs with your company, the two gentlemen that installed our windows will be the ones we’ll ask for because they are the reason you can say, Simply the Best for Less."

Steve and Landy Rankin say, "We had over 20 windows installed and never dreamed it would only take one day to install them all! Each installer had his own job to do and the entire process was so smooth and professional. We were so impressed with the results! They cleaned up all the debris they had and at the end of the day you never knew that they had even been there…except for seeing my beautiful new windows. Please feel free to use us as a reference at any time. We have definitely become huge Window World fans!"

Valerie Johnson adds, "I would love to do commercials for your company. The Window World installers were very professional. I am ecstatic; very, very happy!"

Window World appreciates and values its customers with customer appreciation events and rewards. The company celebrates with its customers in a true "family reunion" style event with lots of food and drinks. This past year the reunion was held at the Huntsville Speedway that features show cars and John Andretti. During the event, Window World also raises money for its Window World Cares charity. "Our reunion is a way for us to thank our customers each year for their business, loyalty, and referrals."

To show its appreciation for its customers, Window World offers a $50 customer referral coupon. "We appreciate your business…and to prove it, we offer customers a $50 check absolutely free," Melissa states. "We just ask customers to fill out the customer referral information form and mail it back in the enclosed, stamped envelope we provide. If your referral becomes a Window World customer, you’ll receive a $50 check upon the completion of the job."

Window World also takes great pride in giving back to the community that has so warmly welcomed the Edwards family. The company is involved in sponsoring numerous school activities and sports, as well as an Ambassador for the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce. As part of the Window World corporate family, each franchise is part of the Window World Care program that focuses on giving back to charities. Recently, Window World Inc. was named Corporate Partner of the Year from St. Jude’s Hospital and raised $1 million through the Window World Care initiative. In addition, Window World is also proud to be a part of the Window World Racing, Veterans Airlift Command, Relay for Life, Downtown Rescue Mission, and CASA of Madison County.

"We appreciate and are thankful to the people in Huntsville and North Alabama who welcomed us with open arms," Michael concludes. "We have the best customers. In the early days, some would make our family food. To this day, we still have one customer who will bake pies for prospective clients that are visiting her house to see our work. Our family is our customers and our employees. We’re rich in our blessings."

A-1 Lawn Care

Simplify Your Lawn by Using A-1 Lawn Care

The grass is always greener when A-1 Lawn Care manicures your lawn. Owner Daniel Hovis says, "It’s like having an outdoor trophy. Everybody will stop by your lawn to admire it and understand you did something worthwhile. To ensure your lawn remains in its pristine state, contact A-1 Lawn Care."

A-1 Lawn Care is a turn-key operation for either residential or a commercial properties with many years of experience. "We’ll set up and maintain your lawn with our top-quality work," Daniel states. "Our focus is on satisfying the client and providing one-on-one service."

During the fall and winter seasons, A-1 Lawn Care provides leaf management services. During this time, A-1 Lawn Care shifts its focus to managing leaves, shrubs, and hedges. A-1 Lawn Care’s focus is to mulch or remove leaves to improve the turf-growing conditions. "A thick layer of leaves blocks sunlight, reducing turf growth because of the shading effect," Daniel explains. "The leaves also trap and hold moisture in the turf canopy, increasing the potential for turf disease. However, A-1 Lawn Care will keep this from happening throughout these months."

Another service A-1 Lawn Care offers is shrub and hedge maintenance. A-1 Lawn Care is experienced in trimming shrubs and hedges. "We know the best times to cut branches, the optimal amount of thinning to perform, and other facets of shrub and hedge pruning that is a necessity to help your plants to stay healthy," Daniel says. "Without proper techniques, there could be possible damage. We have the right tools to trim shrubs and hedges properly and safely."

A-1 Lawn Care also provides aeration maintenance. "Aerating your lawn is one of the beneficial factors that help promote healthier soil and grass," Daniel comments. "In your typical lawn care, aeration should be a part of your lawn’s regular health regimen to ensure good irrigation, improved soil, and roots and grass health. Lawn aeration allows the soil to breathe, thus allowing air, moisture, and nutrients to flow into the roots."

In addition, A-1 Lawn Care services feature sprinkler installation. A-1 Lawn Care can install an irrigation system for lush, green yards, healthier plants, and an increase in home value. "From small residential systems to the largest and most sophisticated commercial systems, A-1’s team is experienced to handle your project by using the most technologically advanced, water-conscious, and reliable products on the market today," Daniel states. "Our maintenance programs can include spring start-up service, monthly operation checks, seasonal controller management, and system winterization to ensure your valuable landscape is properly watered. Also, our technicians can certify or rebuild your backflow device to meet city code and make necessary repairs and upgrades to keep your system running."

A-1 Lawn Care works with clients on different options of service to fit their budgets, such as seasonal and yearly contracts, and pay-by-the-cut. Daniel says, "With a yearly contract we offer a 10% discount. We also provide package deals for all subdivision or cut-by-cut offered in 8-, 10-, and 12-month contracts."

Across the Pond

Think Outside

When Trevor Cole opened Across the Pond in April 2003, his purpose was to fill the niche of meeting pond lovers’ needs and providing new ideas and designs for backyard ponds. Today, Across the Pond has grown into an all-needs pond, lawn, fish house, gifts, and outdoor pieces and furniture business…and all things you can think of for outside. "Our business is a work in progress and we’ve always got new ideas," Trevor explains. "You haven’t been anywhere like this!"

Trevor continues, "We welcome guests to come here for ideas and displays, information, and service. What sets us apart is the friendly and knowledgeable service."

From initial design and construction to implementing fish and animal life, Across the Pond is prepared to meet its clients’ needs. Across the Pond is known for its selection and expertise on high-quality, imported fish and according to Cole, "It is recognized as one of the largest and most diverse selections of nature supplies, ponds, fish, and garden gifts in the Southeast. We have a unique selection of the most popular elements for outdoor lifestyles, such as smokers, grills, fire burners, and outdoor kitchens."

As a result of a personal love and experience with nature, Across the Pond has become a concentration of high-quality products, including a variety of aquatic plants, pond accessories, imported and domestic fish, fountains and statues, bird feeders and animal houses, and garden gifts. On the grounds at the Huntsville facility is the fish house. "In our Nature pond, there are Carp, Gill, and a big Koi fish that’s 38-inches long. She weighs 60 pounds and loves customers to pet her. She’s our ‘show stopper’ and we call her A Fish Called Wanda the Second!"

Four years ago, Trevor expanded to include a location in Florence. Situated on five acres, the Florence facility offers a lot of the same unique products and services as the Huntsville facility.

In addition to its unique offerings for outside, Across the Pond features Café Olivia, named after Trevor and wife Jeannie’s daughter, at its Huntsville location. The café offers lunch, snacks, specialty coffees, homemade desserts, and ice cream. Dine in or carry out is available for orders and space is available for large parties or groups with advance notice. The café’s setting is an inspiration for guests who are looking for a cup of coffee and backyard pond ideas; a collection of iguanas, turtles, friendly parrots, giant fish tanks, and an aviary full of budgies (parakeets) that charm children and adults alike.

"We’re thrilled of the success we’ve had," Trevor states. "This whole project was just a dream, and it’s morphed into what it is today. Our reward is when people say we just love this place, that your place is our place, and they love to just come and hang out. Come grab a cup of coffee and explore our store as it’s always changing. Cheerio!"

Alabama Foundation Specialists

We Support Everything You Love

Alabama Foundation Specialists (AFS) owner Ben Bayless, Jr., states, "The best client is an educated homeowner. We know it can be hard to understand why your home needs foundation or structural repair because most of the time, you can’t see what’s happening underground."

AFS is a foundation repair, basement waterproofing, basement finishing, and crawl space repair contractor serving all of north Alabama and southern Tennessee. "Everything we do is based upon helping homeowners understand the signs and symptoms of foundation damage so they can make educated decisions about caring for their home," Ben explains. "We firmly believe that your home is the greatest investment you’ll ever make, and it’s our top priority to help you protect it."

In addition to north Alabama, AFS also serves Birmingham, Montgomery, Chattanooga, TN, and Columbus, GA. "We’ve grown throughout the state because our customers recognize AFS has highly specialized knowledge of the region’s soil conditions and how they affect building structures," Ben says. "Simply put, our deep, local expertise is something that national organizations can’t match. Our roots are in Alabama, and that makes all the difference in foundation, crawlspace, and basement repair."

AFS is continually recognized by industry leading organizations for unrelenting commitment to customer service. The Better Business Bureau of North Alabama named AFS a Finalist for The Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics, and the company maintains an A+ rating with the BBB. In September 2011, the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce recognized AFS as a Finalist for the Small Business of the Year in the Professional Services Category.

AFS recently announced the completion of a new operating facility located on Ryland Pike, in north eastern Madison County. The facility is a 15,000 square-foot facility that will house foundation repair, waterproofing, and CleanSpace installation teams. Ben notes, "There are two reasons why we’re able to continue to grow in our region. First, it’s our customers who give us the opportunity to repair and protect their homes every day. And the second is the dedication of the entire AFS team to delivering great service."

Ben continues, "From our foundation technicians, to our project managers and our office staff…we’re all here to deliver WOW service to each and every customer." The entire company operates based on the motto We Support Everything You Love, and it couldn’t be clearer that they consider each and every customer to be a member of the Alabama Foundation Specialists family.

Bragg's of Huntsville

Providing Quality Furniture to Enhance Your Life

Since 1941, Bragg’s of Huntsville furniture store has been providing quality furniture to enhance your life. Leonard Bragg, Sr. first founded the store’s original location on Washington Street in downtown Huntsville. He started by selling used furniture and appliances and then grew to offer new and used furniture. From there, Bragg’s Furniture continued to grow and eventually moved to selling new furniture only. During Huntsville’s growth years of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, Bragg’s was in the hands of Leonard’s sons, Leonard Bragg, Jr. and Joe Bragg. Today, Leonard’s grandsons, Alan Bragg and Vann Bragg, carry on the family’s tradition of providing the Huntsville area with top-quality furnishings to enhance your home.

Bragg’s of Huntsville is a full-service home furnishing store. The store carries multiple lines of furniture, from upper-middle, and high-end manufacturers in all categories of furnishings. "We are not a single line or brand store," Alan explains. "As a full-service, multi-line store, we have access to and are able to offer the best furnishings from dozens of manufacturers. You could call it ‘cherry picking’ the best furniture lines and sources, to bring all of those products together in one location for the customer."

Inside Bragg’s of Huntsville, customers will find furnishings and pieces for every room in the house. Some of the many offerings include wood furniture for the bedroom, dining room, great room, family room, the office, and more. There are occasional tables, home entertainment centers, curio cabinets, and clocks from which customers can select. In addition, there is upholstered furniture, from fabric sofas to chairs and recliners and leather sofas, chairs, ottomans, and recliners. Along with these furnishing options, finish off the room with original artwork, framed prints, lamps, accessories, and mattresses. "Whether it’s a new home or one you’ve lived in for years, you can make your home beautiful with the services and furnishing from Bragg's of Huntsville."

What sets Bragg’s of Huntsville apart is its custom order capabilities. "Our custom order capabilities are exceptional," Alan states. "Should you not see exactly what your home needs in our showroom, our design staff can guide you through all of the options available, and then custom order it in the fabrics, leathers, finishes, and trims you want."

Bragg’s of Huntsville prides itself on selling quality made products and brands. Alan says, "Over the last decade, as with a lot of the products Americans buy, a large portion of furniture production has moved overseas. We have worked to continue providing true quality furniture by constantly shifting the mix of products and manufacturers we represent."

Alan continues, "We believe in quality. Your home is where you live, and the furnishings you put in it should enhance your life. They provide the backdrop and atmosphere to where you live. Quality home furnishings are an investment in the quality of your life. Our goal is help you make a purchase that you will be proud of for years."

Burleson Master Pools

A Family Business for Three Generations

Burleson Master Pools is now in its third generation of being family owned and operated since 1965. James Burleson first founded the company after working for Robert Baker in his pool business in Owens Crossroads. "In spring and summer, my father would build pools for Mr. Baker and one of his projects was the enlisted men’s pool on Redstone Arsenal in 1959," President Benny Burleson recalls. "Then during the fall, my dad would work at the cotton gin and in the winter he would work at Mr. Baker’s hardware store. In 1965, Mr. Baker was killed in an accident and my father bought the pool business from the Baker family."

The Burlesons’ experience in the pool industry goes back to when the YMCA decided to build pools in the rural parts of Madison County, such as New Hope, New Market, Madison, and Gurley. In the 1970s, Burleson Master Pools started building commercial pools for apartment complexes. As the city grew, so did the company.

In 1984, James retired and Benny took over the family business as the company continued to grow with the construction of pools in both residential and commercial areas, such as in apartment complexes, hotels, and subdivisions. Burleson Master Pools expanded its territories in 1996 to serve the states of Mississippi and Tennessee, along with the entire state of Alabama. Previous projects include pools at the University of Alabama, Mississippi State University, several municipalities, the city of Mobile, and state parks in Tennessee, all the while building residential pools within a 50-mile radius of Huntsville.

Today, Benny is joined on the staff by son, Marc, who is Vice President of Construction and niece, Beth Parker, who is the residential pool designer and residential sales manager. "With three generations of our family in the business, it offers customers the security to know that they are dealing with the same people down the road and who have many years of experience," Benny explains.

Burleson Master Pools offer the finest selection of pools and spas because it uses a 100% Gunite construction process that allows the company to build pools and spas in any shape or size that can be imagined. It uses high-quality materials, equipment, and workmanship. As a member of the Master Pools Guild, Burleson offers pools that are built using the finest materials and construction techniques for a solid, but elegant result. Burleson provides complete design assistance with custom pool design drawings generated within its CAD department.

The company’s expertise goes beyond the construction and design of residential and commercial pools, into renovations of existing pools, landscapes, hardscapes, outdoor kitchens and fire places, grills, fire pits, fountains, spas, lighting, pool bars, and fencing. In addition, the company has a full service department that offers services such as opening and closing of pools, contracts for maintenance, and replacement of equipment, such as pumps and filters.

Burleson Master Pools is a member of Huntsville/Madison County Homebuilders Association, Alabama Builder C (ABC), and Master Pool Guild.

Consolidated Construction Company

Extending Family Values Through Local Work

The family values of Consolidated Construction Company (CCC) have been passed down through three generations of Bragg family leadership in this local construction company. The late Henry Bragg co-founded the company, which is now directed by his son, Greg Bragg (President), and his grandson, J. Greg Bragg (Vice President). The Bragg family continues to uphold the high standards of excellence based upon respect, honesty and high business ethics with both employees and clients.

These family values have enabled CCC to become a major supporter of other local businesses and community groups, and have solidified its reputation locally and regionally as an outstanding construction company. Following the company motto of "On Time and In Budget", CCC has completed many construction projects in the areas of education, religious institutions, state and local government buildings, commercial properties, industrial facilities, multi-housing units, and sports/recreation complexes. Treating both employees and clients like family has created a legacy of quality for this successful, local company.

One of CCC’s current projects is a commercial facility on Shields Road for Aladdin Light Lift, Inc. John Falls, founder, decided to move his business to Huntsville and says, "Aladdin Light Lift, Inc. and Aladdin Storage Lift, LLC have moved to Huntsville for several reasons: a safe, family-friendly environment; the positive business atmosphere supported by quality service and construction personnel; and an involved and influential Chamber of Commerce."

Aladdin Light Lift manufactures motorized chandelier lifts to raise and lower chandeliers for areas with high ceilings, as well as storage lifts to easily access attic areas. The company has been in business for 20 years and its products are marketed by approximately 900 distributors throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.

For Aladdin’s new 22,500 square-foot building in Chase Industrial Park, Falls knew he needed a contractor with a proven track record and was won over by CCC’s previous building reputation and by Greg Bragg. "Mr. Bragg was extremely professional, provided a reasonable price, and was very punctual in answering any questions," Falls comments. "I wanted someone I could trust."

Greg and the CCC family are also pleased with the Aladdin project. Greg explains, "When Mr. Falls brought us his building plans, they did not include all local codes. So we talked with him and changed the plans to bring them up to code and presented ideas to save him money."

This aspect of value engineering – reducing a client’s cost without losing value or quality – was important in this project and is used by CCC whenever possible. Greg continues, "For the Aladdin project, we were able to incorporate the client’s specific needs and ideas and develop a plan with which Mr. Falls was very happy."

Greg concludes, "In my opinion, when building locally, it is always better to have a local contractor with local sub-contractors. The convenience, accessibility, and accountability of all contractors make it easier to address complications in the construction project or even to expand the project. And, as a local contractor, it is easier for CCC to provide continued service after the project is complete. As stakeholders in this community, we are committed to re-investing the majority of any profits made in the companies and people of this community."

Cost Cutters Family Hair Salon

Just Your Style!

Cost Cutters is "just your style" for busy, value-conscious families who want a wide range of styles, but need prices that are easy to afford. "Cost Cutters is dedicated to providing you and your family with convenient hair care services by professional stylists who care about your needs," Franchise Owner Karen Thomas explains. "Our locations offer a relaxed hair care experience with no appointments and no hassles." Co-owner John Thomas adds, "We’re pleased to provide these quality hair care services to the men, women, and families of north Alabama."

John and Karen Thomas moved to the Tennessee Valley 14 years ago from Minnesota and founded Cutaway Haircare Corporation before establishing their Cost Cutters franchises. Karen says, "We love both the warmth of the climate and the warmth of the people here."

Prior to becoming a franchisee, Karen earned her Masters of Business Administration from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN and worked for the corporate office of The Barbers Hairstyling for Men and Women for five years as Vice President of Distribution. She also was the Assistant Director of Purchasing for Regis Corporation. John’s previous experience includes being a stock investor, skydiving instructor, and a store manager for the Good Year Tire Company.

Cost Cutters opened its first salon in Muscle Shoals inside Wal-Mart in 1995. Cutaway Haircare Corporation purchased nine existing salons from another franchisee and began growing the brand from the Shoals to Fort Payne. There are currently five locations in the Huntsville/Madison area.

Karen and John work with the shops to provide quality service with quality products. "We promise our customers a memorable experience – every service, every visit," Karen states. "Our mission is to be loyal and provide consistent, superior customer service with a Yes We Can! attitude. Our values are to be honest, build sales, build relationships, have fun, and control costs."

She continues, "We introduce ourselves with a handshake and smile. You receive a shampoo service with your haircut and can expect to receive a consultation about what services you desire and what would look good on you, as opposed to being asked ‘what are we going to do today’. We’ll discuss the proper professional products to take home to maintain your style, as well as any future services."

Cost Cutters professional Stylists receive personal and business training. The Stylists provide all types of haircuts and styles, hair color, perms, relaxers, up-dos, and waxing services.

Cost Cutters are members of the local area Chambers of Commerce and support many community events including local teams, breast cancer awareness, and domestic abuse awareness. In 2001, Cost Cutters was named Franchisee of the Year from its corporate office.

Farmers Insurance, The Patterson Insurance Agency

Knowing What Matters to You the Most

Owner Courtney Patterson of the Patterson Insurance Agency, Farmers Insurance Group, knows what matters to you the most with all your insurance needs.

It offers insurance for auto, homeowners, rental property, life, and business and worker’s compensation, as well as for specialty products such as RV, four-wheelers, motorcycles, and boats. Also in the future, Courtney will be able to provide financial services, such as mutual funds and IRAs. "Farmers is a solid, financially stable company that offers a complete product line for all insurance needs, as well as excellent customer and claims services," she states.

Courtney, who has been in the insurance industry for over seven years, is joined on the staff by Keshia Patterson, CSR and Darron Reese, Producer. She also works with her husband, Justin Patterson, who is a financial planner. The Patterson Insurance Agency focuses on making sure it serves its customers’ best interest. "In addition to serving our customers’ needs, we are proud to provide local service and knowledge of insurance," Courtney says. "Our goal is to inform our customers and potential customers what insurance is all about, its benefits, and why you should be covered." After the destruction of the tornadoes on April 27, 2011, this is even more important than ever to the agency and the community.

The insurance Courtney offers helps to simplify her customers’ lives and enables them to do so with multiple discounts. Some of the discounts Farmers offers include discounts for Occupational Groups (Doctors, RNs, Dentists, Engineers, Teachers, Police, Firefighters, etc.), Retired Professionals, Homeowners, Good Students, Two or More Automobiles, and more. Along with homeowner’s insurance, Famers also offers renters insurance and condo insurance.

The Farmers suite of Life insurance products are designed to help meet different life insurance needs at various stages of life, including needs of business owners. Farmers offers several life insurance products, including Term Life, Whole Life, Universal Life, Key Person, Annuities, and more.

Furniture Medic by Steve and Corinne Healy

The Prescription for Damaged Furniture

For more than 17 years, Furniture Medic by Steve and Corinne Healy has been your "prescription for damaged furniture". Whether it’s in your home or at the office, owners Steve and Corinne focus on fine furniture touch-up and repair, usually with on-site, same-day service using advanced techniques and environmentally friendly materials to restore furniture and wood fixtures to like-new condition. "Our core idea is to restore your furnishings to their original beauty," Steve explains. "This concept is often referred to as ‘reuse’, one of the three guiding principles of green living. Through expert repair and maintenance, we extend the life of your furniture."

After 22 years in the U.S. Army, Steve retired as a Sergeant Major (E-9). Along with Corinne, they opened the Furniture Medic franchise in 1994. Steve concentrates on the technical side of the business, and Corinne handles administration and customer support. Steve’s passion for woodworking made it an easy decision. "I’ve always been a woodworker and dreamed of having my own woodshop where I could pursue my hobby of more than 35 years," Steve says. "I enjoy restoring furniture to its original state."

In addition to furniture restoration, Furniture Medic offers professional moving damage inspections to individuals and members of the moving industry throughout the area. As a member of the Claims Prevention and Procedures Council (CPPC), the company is skilled to handle all damage claims as a result of moving. Services include typed reports, e-mail service, digital photos, and repair estimates.

With its specialization in serving the moving industry, Furniture Medic inspects moving damage for military and government workers assigned to Redstone Arsenal. "We are familiar with the new Defense Personal Property System (DPS)," Steve states. "I’m retired from the Army, so I understand how the military and government claims process works, and I have easy access onto the Arsenal."

The company’s business philosophy is to do the job right with prompt, courteous, and dependable service that saves customers money with touch-up or repairing, as opposed to replacing it. The focus is on customer satisfaction from the time you call Corinne for an appointment until the job is complete. Many of Furniture Medic’s clients are extremely satisfied and their testimonials are posted on the company’s web site under customer feedback. "More than 90% of our customers are repeats or referrals," Corinne says. "That says a lot about our business." Furniture Medic is a member of the Better Business Bureau and is proud of their A+ rating.

Furniture Medic doesn’t advocate stripping and refinishing. Instead, it offers a number of services for residential and commercial customers that include antique and heirloom restoration and repair; hand waxing for fine antiques; and re-gluing and stabilizing to repair loose joints in chairs, tables, and beds. It also offers piano finish repair; parts fabrication to repair or replace broken wooden or metal parts; moving damage inspections, estimates, and repairs; image enhancement for commercial customers to touch up business furniture; and a deluxing service for high-gloss dining room and conference room tables.

Steve and Corinne want to thank the community for supporting our military and its veterans, and for more than 17 years of supporting their business.

LEAN Frog

Bringing LEAN to Main Street

Driving performance excellence in today’s small businesses is Lean Master Byron Headrick’s passion. He credits his company’s success to a few distinct reasons. "My company, LEAN Frog, helps ‘Main Street’ entrepreneurs be more efficient and, therefore, successful," Byron states. "Our approach is uniquely relationship-based. While LEAN Frog trains and addresses specific improvements within small businesses, we also go beyond this to help businesses actually implement their newly created, customized processes. We do this by offering continual mentoring and coaching to all levels of a client’s organization, from owners to employees."

Byron continues, "This is the ‘secret sauce’ that ensures the long-term sustainability of the improvements that are made. LEAN Frog is also based here in North Alabama and this allows for the building and maintaining of relationships with our small business clients without increasing their cost. These distinctions are why LEAN Frog’s small business clients succeed. Furthermore, we realize our clients really come to depend on us to help them in all facets of their business and we take that stewardship seriously. We guarantee 100% client satisfaction...it’s in every contract."

Utilizing the tools of Lean and Six Sigma – the same tools used by 60% of Fortune 100 companies to improve their business processes – Byron has developed the LEAN Frog Business System Model. The system is composed of six components, including:

  • Leadership and Strategy

  • Measurement and Analysis

  • Employee Engagement and Development

  • Internal Support Processes

  • Value Creation Processes

  • Customer and Market Focus

"We can help small businesses prevail in great times and bad through the establishment of a culture of continuous improvement," Byron explains. "By helping shape the role of Lean to fit their specific business based on their unique business products and strategy, LEAN Frog delivers whole business solutions that incorporate the organization’s core processes and functions. We set the course for real, sustainable success and define opportunities not yet imagined."

Client Beverly Loeb Boylan, CEO and President of Huntsville Radio Service (HRS) states, "Since 1946, HRS has been committed to providing its customers with excellent products and services. Our continued commitment is to our new and old customers that we are always looking for opportunities to stay viable and improve our overall business services. LEAN Frog has helped us to improve our processes and organize our day to be more efficient and productive. Communication is our business and we understand how crucial it is in all businesses and communities. Byron at LEAN Frog has helped us fine tune our communication within the company to keep our communication the best it can be. Byron has further helped us get electronically ‘Lean’ so we do not waste time searching through unorganized computer files. You CAN teach old dogs new tricks!"

Kerri Groce and Afton Stanford Douglas of Blu Healing Spa add, "Byron has been an integral part of our businesses advancement. He was able to take us from working seven days a week to working eighteen days a month and making more money. Byron taught us to value our time and to have faith in our skill. We are now exceeding the original goals set and look forward to each meeting we have with Byron to daydream our next move. We think Byron rocks!"

The Lean Business System is based on the following principles:

  1. Value is defined by the customers and stakeholders. Strive to increase that value and consistently deliver more value than expected.

  2. Teach ALL your people to understand value and then listen to their ideas for increasing value.

  3. Control all aspects of your business costs (time; energy; money) that do not directly create, increase, or deliver value. These costs prevent your ability to compete and exceed customers’ expectations.

  4. Understand how Value is created by your business and how it flows to your customers. Flow value to your customers through systematic, optimized processes.

  5. Measure how you and your team perform at all levels of business from operations to strategy. Reward and recognize successes. Learn from failures – FAST. Then get back into the "game" and try again. Pursue Perfection. Think outside your industry’s "box".

Lean can give you solutions, results, and success. Lean can take you places. LEAN Frog can make sure you get there.

Additionally, LEAP’s Organizational Management has a partnership with the Defense Acquisition University (DAU) for LEAP students to obtain DAU certification for contract management certification for its Level 1 certification that’s free of charge. "We’re excited about this offering," Williams-Smith says. "This is a value-added service for LEAP students in Business Organizational Management and the IT programs that will allow them to work for the government. In any of these government positions, people must have a four-year accredited degree and either certifications or be certification ready. Look for this partnership to expand with more DAU certifications in the future."

The LEAP program was established in the mid-1990s and is fully accredited, which means someone who has a degree from Oakwood University can work for the government and government contractors, as well as attend graduate schools in other parts of the country. The LEAP program offers five degrees for its students, including General Studies, Organizational Management, Psychology, Church Leadership, and Information Technology. "Many find it difficult to go back to school full time and work at the same time," Williams-Smith says. "However, LEAP students can finish their degree in about 18 months or less by attending class one night per week or partially online."

Williams-Smith continues, "Our LEAP program is designed for the working adult wanting to complete their college degree while maintaining their work and life commitment. Our tuition rates are very affordable. Oakwood is also offering tuition forgiveness to those that come back to Oakwood and have had a bill for seven years or older. When it’s time to graduate and if they keep their LEAP bill current, the old bill will get wiped away when that student graduates."

Lewis and Son Roofing & Construction

An Honest Job Well Done

When Robert Parks opened his front door on April 27 to see half his shingles on the ground and his neighbor’s house in the middle of the street, he was concerned only for the well-being of his neighbors. When his roof collapsed into his house, he realized he was the one who needed some immediate help. Searching the business directory, Mr. Parks tried several roofing companies and received no responses. It was Shane Lewis, President of Lewis and Son, who answered and promptly arrived at Parks’ home…providing him with an honest job that was well done. "Lewis and Son has made this an easy load to carry," Parks says. "I appreciate Shane’s work ethic of honesty and fairness in business."

The work on Robert Parks’ home in Anderson Hills involved many products and services from Lewis and Son. The company installed bamboo and tile floorings and carpeting, custom-built cabinets, new light fixtures, and painted the interior of the home. The windows were replaced with the high-quality 5500 series Simonton Reflections® window units, which provide ultra energy efficiency and unsurpassed beauty. Lewis and Son installed the prestigious GAF Timberline HD Lifetime shingles on the Parks’ new roof. This product is known for its reliability, value, performance, and beauty, as well as the lifetime warranty. To complement the new roof, Lewis and Son used the toughest, most durable brand, Royal DuraPlank’s vinyl soffits and fascia.

Lewis and Son had the privilege of serving another victim of the April 27 tornadoes. Mr. Phil McGuire’s entire home shifted during the tornado outburst, which cracked the sheetrock and damaged windows and doors. The storm also damaged the roof and peeled back the siding. McGuire states, "There were quite a few things to be done, but we entrusted them all, from the immediate, temporary repair to the overhaul of restoration to Shane Lewis."

Prior to the tornado, Lewis and Son had installed the roofing and siding on Mr. McGuire’s home. To restore the house, the company replaced cracked sheetrock, including interior ceilings, fixed the roof, and installed new doors, windows, and gutters. The McGuires also had Simonton Reflections® windows and door installed. These windows meet the ENERGY STAR® guidelines and strict standards of the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) for air and water infiltration. Simonton has been handcrafting the finest windows since 1946 and continues to be recognized as the highest in quality. Lewis and Son also uses "America’s #1 brand of siding", James Hardie® Siding. This siding combines the warmth and character of wood with the unsurpassed durability and low maintenance of fiber-cement. The home’s restored beauty was complete with the ColorPlus® technology that provided a beautiful, consistent finish on the James Hardie® siding. Mr. McGuire continues to be pleased with Lewis and Son’s consistency of excellence, "This company does the job right," McGuire states. "We have gotten nothing but quality work for the 14 years we’ve used them. I recommend Shane and his high-quality products."

High-quality work is Lewis and Son’s goal every time. President Shane states, "People want professional service, and they’ve recognized that Lewis and Son Roofing & Construction does a professional job every time!"

Over the past decade, Lewis and Son has expanded its work from roofing residential and commercial buildings into the area of home remodeling, thereby satisfying hundreds of customers, both on the outside and the inside of their homes. Shane states, "Once we do a quality job on their roof, people have confidence in asking us to do remodeling jobs as well. We replace windows and doors, install all types of siding, and build dream decks and room additions. People want professional service, and they’ve recognized that Lewis and Son Roofing & Construction does a professional job every time!"

Lewis and Son is the largest roofing company in northern Alabama and southern Tennessee, a member of the Huntsville-Madison County Builders Association, and a GAF Master Elite Residential Roofing Contractor. As Elite roofing contractors, Lewis and Son uses only the highest-quality, locally purchased products. These products include the GAF Elite Weather Stopper 3-Part Roof Protection System, which promises the Best roofing, contractor and warranty available, and a full line of highly recognized, recommended and rated GAF-ELK shingles.

This designation is significant because only 3% of the roofing contractors in the nation have been awarded this status, and Lewis and Son is the only GAF-ELK Master Elite Roofing Contractor headquartered in Huntsville. Elite roofing contractors must be fully licensed in their state, be adequately insured, have a proven reputation for providing quality roofing services throughout the community, and be committed to ongoing professional training to ensure quality installation.

The standard of excellence is consistent across the array of products Lewis and Son uses including the Simonton Reflections® window line, the Argon gas filled window that features Tilt-in/lift-out design, Between-the-Glass Grids, and the specially designed Simonton Sill® and Air Lok™ protections. The company’s recommended siding is James Hardie® that resists damage from wet and humid or cold and windy climates, impact damage from wind and hail, and insect damage. James Hardie® backs its product with a 50-year limited transferable product warranty against chipping, rotting, cracking, and delaminating, ensuring the exceptional exterior beauty of the home.

Lewis and Son strives to provide quality assurance in every area, from excellence in product and presentation to a high level of customer service that includes protecting the customer by providing Worker’s Compensation Insurance for its employees and never using a subcontractor. Shane notes, "Insuring our employees safeguards the homeowner from liability, and also means our labor, and therefore the work we do, costs a little more." Lewis and Son offers a one-year money-back warranty on leak repairs, a 24/7 roof-repair emergency service, and a flat-tire guarantee if one of the company’s nails gives your car a flat tire.

Shane concludes, "Lewis and Son Roofing & Construction has served the Tennessee Valley as the premier roofing and construction company for more than 50 years. We are a family-owned and operated business with a solid reputation for fairness, outstanding warranties and quality service."

Office Furniture Outlet

Staying Strong in Tough Times

In this recent soft economy, Office Furniture Outlet has been able to stand strong by using the downturn in business purchasing as an unprecedented buying opportunity for itself and its clientele. "With the challenges of the economy over the years, things are changing," Owner Niles Prestage states. "There may be a lack of demand for office furniture, but the Huntsville area has been fortunate with the huge influence of the government and its contractors, as well as the BRAC movement that goes on despite the reverse in private industry."

He continues, "For us, personally, this has not been without benefit as we are able to buy much of the high-quality, like-new office furniture for less than the price of cheaper furniture that’s out there. We’re taking advantage of this opportunity and are blessed with the warehouse space to store the furniture."

Many of the oldest and highest-quality, fine furniture manufacturers are making large cuts in their inventory, allowing Office Furniture Outlet to buy overstocked and discontinued items in large quantities and sell them at reduced prices. "We are able to do this with chairs, desks, cubicles, etc., and sell them for less than half the original price, sometimes up to 75% off the original ticket," Niles explains. "Also our purchasing hasn’t been limited to just the immediate area. We’re able to purchase these items from coast to coast that allows us to provide our customers with a large and wide selection."

Office Furniture Outlet has the name-brand office furniture for you at incredibly low prices. Choose from traditional and contemporary office sets or select individual desks, credenzas, conference tables, chairs, panel systems, framed art, and accessories. One of the outstanding lines Office Furniture Outlet is marketing is Paoli Furniture, one of America’s leading manufacturers of fine office furniture. In addition to Paoli, the store also carries Veranda and Tide Water furniture that’s being sold up to 75% off its original prices. Some of the other famous name-brand manufacturers include lines of furniture from Hooker, Riverside, IFI, Jasper Desk, Globe, HON, and Steelcase.

The atmosphere at Office Furniture Outlet is a relaxed shopping experience where customers are able to browse the large showroom with a seasoned staff that’s available to help from locating the perfect chair to designing an entire office. Professional delivery and setup are also available. "The price and selection at Office Furniture Outlet will bring you in, but the quality and the people will bring you back," Niles says.

Oxi Fresh Carpet Cleaning

The World’s ‘Greenest’ Carpet Cleaner

Oxi Fresh Carpet Cleaning Alabama Franchise Owners Randy and Amy Butler discovered the world’s greenest carpet cleaner through a truly personal experience. "Our own personal situation lead to us finding Oxi Fresh," Amy explains. "Our son has severe allergies and asthma, and our house has wall-to-wall carpeting. We had many carpet cleaning companies come out and clean the carpets to help our son, and his asthma got worse. In addition, the prices we were given over the phone weren’t upheld and it ended up costing us more. Even though this was a personal struggle, it ended up being a blessing in disguise."

Amy searched for a solution and found Oxi Fresh. During Christmas 2008, the family travelled to Grand Junction, CO. While there, Randy went to Denver to talk to Oxi Fresh. "They took me out to a job on a foreclosed house that had been empty for three years with dirt and debris all over," Randy describes. "I listened to the tech and asked the Oxi Fresh owner, ‘Why not just replace it? Why clean it?’ He told me to watch. I couldn’t believe what I saw! It looked incredible and was almost dry in one hour. I didn’t need to see another job. I was sold!"

Shortly after that, the Butlers established their Alabama territory in February 2009 and currently serve the Madison, Morgan, and Limestone County areas. What makes Oxi Fresh different is its solution and the oxygen used in the process. First, the company walks through to see what opportunities that it could take care of, and next, a pre-spray is applied lightly to the carpets that won’t soak down to the pad. The pre-spray has the Oxi in it that explodes the dirt and stains from the carpet fibers.

Next, the company uses its OL1000 proprietary machine on the carpet. This encapsulator, with its counter-rotating brushes, scrubs deep down into the carpet pulling up all the dirt and then it’s thrown away. "We don’t drag hoses through your house and we don’t have to open doors or windows to get the carpet dry," Randy states. "If it’s raining outside, we can still clean the carpets. In addition, our equipment uses less energy than a light bulb. All other processes may use 200 gallons of water and we use only four gallons."

Oxi Fresh is truly a "green" process and nontoxic. Its products are all EPA designed for the environment. "This is a really big point that sets us apart, as it took three years for us to get this status with products having no measurable Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)," Randy explains. "These VOCs are what make you sick."

Another thing that sets Oxi Fresh apart is its EPA and Carpet and Rug Institute seals of approval. Oxi Fresh is also a U.S. Green Building Council member and has an International Facility Management certification that allows commercial businesses to receive tax credits from using these standards. Oxi Fresh is a member of the Huntsville/Madison County and the Madison City Chambers of Commerce, and is accredited with a BBB A rating with zero complaints.

Premier Schools

Providing 12 years of High-quality Early Education in Madison County

Premier Schools’ vision has always been to create a place for children "where the wonders of the world unfold". Founder Leslie Buchanan has successfully brought that vision to life with two convenient locations in the Huntsville and Madison areas for more than 12 years. Each campus provides a safe, secure, loving environment with a high-caliber program of early childhood education. "When you come to Premier, you’ll see our environment is child-centered, from classroom setup to lesson plan activities," Premier’s Madison Director Melanie Watson explains.

Accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), both Premier campuses offer programs for infants through school-age children. Each campus has a unique outdoor environment and indoor gymnasium for children to explore. Premier Schools have an open door policy and encourage parental involvement. In addition to campus visits, classrooms are equipped with Internet cameras that allow families the option to view their child during the day. Premier Schools offers Premier InTouch, a wireless emergency notification system used to notify parents when there’s a necessary change to the regular schedule. Both campuses are the recipient of several Office of School Readiness "First Class" Pre-K grants, the National Endowment for the Humanities Picturing America grant, and a Kid-smart grant through TASC.

Premier follows the High Scope curriculum, which focuses on developing the whole child and cultivating an innate joy of learning. In alignment with High Scope philosophy, the classrooms are multi-aged, which gives every child a chance to be a leader and learn from their peers. "We treat each child as an individual and work with each family to make sure each child is getting what they need," Melanie says.

One of the greatest assets of Premier Schools is its committed and experienced teaching staff. Many of the current teachers have been with Premier for several years. Both Directors, Wendi Daversa at Research Park and Melanie Watson at Madison, began as classroom teachers 12 years ago when Premier first opened its doors. Although Premier continually accepts new applications, each campus has a core group of teachers that help to train new teachers and provide consistency from year to year. "We believe firmly that our teachers are one of the main reasons our families remain enrolled with Premier," Research Park Director Wendi Daversa explains. Teachers are trained in how to implement the High Scope curriculum in child center classrooms and work together to provide the best learning environment for the children.

Melanie concludes, "We’re known for providing a place where children are valued as unique individuals and where families and teachers work together to help children achieve their highest potential."

Rosenblum Realty

April 27, 2011: A Reminder of ‘Home is Where the Heart is’

No one will forget that day in April when the skies turned black and the rains and winds brought that deadly rash of tornados across Madison County and may other areas of north Alabama. Unfortunately, many lives were lost and personal possessions were swept away or permanently damaged in a matter of seconds. Many people were in shock as their world had been turned upside down. We eventually read about and saw video and pictures, of just how devastating the damages were. When someone loses their home in such a quick, permanent, and devastating way, no one can adequately describe the personal loss that would be felt at that time. Not only do folks have to pick up and deal with the details of the aftermath, but just knowing that some things can never be replaced and things will never be as they were before, is very unsettling.

Being in the real estate business and particularly doing property management services, during those days, Rosenblum Realty had concerns about some of the properties it managed and also the tenants who occupied those properties. "As our city and county public service providers began to dig out and restore order, we made our way into some neighborhoods to assess any potential damages that we might need to respond to," Owner Carey Rosenblum states. "We knew we had several properties we managed that lined up with the tornado damaged corridor through the Harvest and Toney areas. When we arrived in those areas, we were shocked at the devastation. Sometimes it was hard to know if you were at the right address, the landscape was so disorienting."

Carey continues, "We finally discovered that major damage had occurred to two or three of our properties in that location. I had a sick feeling that there was going to be loss of life in those properties. However, after a full review, we had more than 100 homes affected that needed some type of repair or damage. Some homes had major damage and two homes were totally destroyed, but thankfully, no one was killed or critically hurt. We encountered one of our tenants, who was fortunately out of town during the storm, but was there sifting through what was left. It was a real helpless feeling to see such ruin and loss."

Since that traumatic day, Rosenblum Realty has found that Huntsville, Madison, and Madison County have a real sense of community. "We have found neighbor helping neighbor, regardless of how well they might have known each other, and regardless of social status, position, color, or creed. Being able to respond to others in a time like this defines our personal character and commitment to a better community. Just as many of you did, we attempted to reach out by cutting tree limbs and removing debris or taking a meal out to a family. Many people also went out and bought, as we did, daily supplies and clothing for those who were suddenly without anything. It was just a simple way of doing what we could to let people know we cared and that they were not forgotten. Fortunately, many would eventually be covered by insurance companies that worked long hours to get funds to those who were covered. "

In doing what it could to assist, Rosenblum Realty began to work with homeowners and insurance companies to try and accommodate temporary housing for many. This unprecedented situation called for some special action, in which Rosenblum Realty consulted with many owners to gain approval to rent some of its vacant inventory on shorter terms than usual. Rosenblum Realty also coordinated with the insurance companies of those who had suffered losses to expedite them being able to move quickly into another suitable home.

"One of our families who had lost their personal possessions had no insurance," Carey explains. "We wanted to do something special for them to help lift their spirits. When we learned about the ‘Alabama Rising’ concert that was taking place in Birmingham, we thought it would be nice to sponsor their family to attend this unique benefit concert. Fortunately, we were able to make the purchase of four seats together. Upon completing other arrangements such as booking a hotel room in Birmingham, securing a rental car for them to use, and providing cash for gasoline, we surprised the family with a phone call to let them know that we were going to make this special event a reality for them. They could use this get-away to forget about their troubles for a few hours and let the group Alabama, Brad Paisley, Sara Evans and other performing artists entertain them for a while. Bringing a smile to their faces at a tough time in their lives brought us some satisfaction in knowing that what you do for others is really very important."

Rosenblum Realty is thankful to know that this area in which we live is such a caring and dynamic community and is willing and capable to reach out to others in times of tragedy or need. Carey continues, "I think this says a lot about why we enjoy calling Huntsville and Madison County our home. The hearts of our residents show a generous spirit and real character and this makes us truly appreciate that home is where the heart is."

REALTOR SPOTLIGHT

Since becoming licensed in 2006, Carolyn Love-Rice has been a REALTOR with Rosenblum Realty. Rosenblum Realty was Carolyn’s first choice based on the recommendations of friends that worked there and her family’s positive experiences as clients. Carolyn felt that her Christian values and high work ethic would be compatible with the company’s favorable reputation.

It had always been a dream of Carolyn’s to become a REALTOR. She felt it would give her the opportunity to help people, while doing something she enjoyed. Her five-year career has since been filled with many satisfied clients. One such client is Anglier Baker, who purchased a home from Carolyn. Ms. Baker had known Carolyn for many years as a friend, and by allowing Carolyn to guide her in her home purchase, she now knows her as a trusted professional. Anglier was impressed with the way Carolyn listened to her and put forth the extra effort to find the "right home". She complimented her skills in negotiating, the patience she showed and the determination to make her home purchase a reality. Anglier says, "Carolyn went beyond my expectations in serving as my REALTOR. Rosenblum Realty is fortunate to have such a hard working person on their team."

Broker Carey Rosenblum agrees, stating, "Carolyn is trustworthy and always seeks to treat other people the way she would want to be treated. With her big smile and friendly personality, one can see that she is not just interested in selling real estate but in giving client satisfaction and making lasting relationships."

In addition to providing high levels of service in real estate, Carolyn is now recognized as an Associate Broker and can continue that level of service throughout the purchasing process. Carolyn holds herself to a high standard as well, "I appreciate the fact that I only have one reputation, and I wants to make mine a good one."

Carey is proud of Carolyn’s accomplishments thus far and hopes that her partnership with Rosenblum will bring many more satisfied clients for years to come.

Signs By Tomorrow

Signs By Tomorrow is Moving!

Signs By Tomorrow’s success and growth is allowing the company to move into a new facility. This new facility is located at 1035 Putman Drive, Suite A in Huntsville and gives Signs By Tomorrow over 7,000 square feet, which will allow the company’s showroom space to increase from the previous amount of 150 square feet to more than 2,000 square feet. "We’re excited to be able to display many more of our exceptional products," Owner Barry Bowerman explains.

In the new location, Signs By Tomorrow intends to add several tradeshow and point-of-purchase displays that allow customers to see actual samples, instead of being limited to catalog pictures. In addition, Signs By Tomorrow has added another printer to its arsenal. "This 60-inch HP DesignJet L25500 Latex Ink printer is a superior printer in its print quality and low print banding," Barry says. When Thomas Slinkard took a course about television construction, he had no idea it would lead to the successful family business, Slinkard Woodcraft, that his son, Greg, continues operating now, 40 years later. Greg’s father built his first television cabinet as a personal challenge, but perfected his cabinetry with kitchen cabinets, entertainment centers, vanities, and bookshelves.

Slinkard Woodcraft now specializes in custom kitchens and offers all types of wood, designs, and details. Greg proudly states, "Our company is very hands-on. I still build every cabinet that leaves the business."

Slinkard Woodcraft products include decks, patios, and cabanas. The company also builds a variety of furniture pieces. "We will also work with your own wood.," Greg comments. "Recently a customer had timber cut and dried, we have built cabinets, tables, grandfather clock, and a craddle all out of the customers own lumber."

In addition, Slinkard Woodcraft uses American-made materials in order to consistently provide high-quality products and construction. Going along with the best in high-quality products and construction, Slinkard Woodcraft uses computer aided designs that gives the ability to make changes quickly. Slinkard Woodcraft’s products have also been constructed and installed in Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Missouri. Greg comments, "We have been known to travel. Undercover Systems/Distinctive Designs

Your Outdoor Living Contractor

Undercover Systems/Distinctive Designs’ goal is to be your outdoor living contractor. Ten years ago, Owner Jim Conn of Undercover Systems/Distinctive Designs saw his dream of working in the construction business come true with the founding of his own business. "After working in the consumer food industry, I decided to take a chance and do something I loved," Jim explains. "I’ve always had a passion for construction so what started as a hobby became a business when I began to build decks and screened porches and the rest is history."

Headquartered in Chattanooga, Undercover Systems/Distinctive Designs provides the Tennessee Valley with a number of unique services and products. Jim continues, "We design and build all types of outdoor living spaces and offer outdoor living products for sale. Our construction services are offered in and around the Chattanooga area while our outdoor living products are available to ship anywhere in the United States.

One of its unique products is the Undercover Systems under deck ceiling. "This system is a ceiling system for high-level decks," Jim says. "The system collects water and debris that fall through the deck and creates a dry living area below."

Another unique offering is its fiberglass pergolas and arbors. "Normally most pergolas are made out of wood and have to be repainted, stained, or repaired," Jim states. "With our fiberglass pergolas, we can provide customers with a high-quality product that stands up to weather and time. In addition, it also comes in a variety of colors, has a lifetime warranty, and is extremely low maintenance."

Also in the Huntsville area, Undercover Systems/Distinctive Designs provides clients with the Solara adjustable patio cover. These patio covers have the beauty of pergolas but offer clients the ability to open the cover for light or a breeze, or close it for shade and protection from rain. The company offers a host of other products including outdoor grill islands, fire pits/places/walls just to mention a few.

What sets Undercover Systems/Distinctive Designs apart is the uniqueness of the products offered and quality of the construction. The company is a complaint-free member of the Better Business Bureau and a member of the National Deck and Railing Association. "Our mission statement is a simple one: To exceed customer expectations by providing superb service, leading edge technology, and quality materials based on a foundation of integrity," Jim says. "We apply our many years of experience in construction and customer service toward all our projects and products. The focus of our business is, and always will be, the customer!"

Action Builders

A Committed Leader in ‘Green’ Building

As a committed leader in "green" building for new custom-built homes, Action Builders, Inc. enforces that promise by building state-of-the-art, energy efficient homes for now and for future generations. "Building ‘green’ is a lifestyle choice that allows you to save money and live a healthier and comfortable life, while also preserving the environment," President Mark Rovere says. "Typically, a ‘green’ home can be 20-30% more energy efficient than a non-green home. There are many levels of ‘green’ building and your budget is considered when determining how ‘green’ to go."

Mark, a Certified Green Professional (CGP) designate from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), and his wife and business partner, Diane, a licensed REALTOR, incorporate many "green" products in their custom-built homes. A standard list includes low-flow showers, toilets, and irrigation systems; indoor air quality fresh air exchange systems; high-efficiency heating and cooling systems; high-efficiency, low e-windows, and other upgrade options. In addition, each home has the basics to qualify for Energy Star certification.

Action Builders is also building green homes with insulated concrete forms (ICF). This method provides a more energy efficient home and also makes the home stronger. Depending on the customer's budget they can use the ICF for just the basement or they can build the entire home using ICF. Another option is to build a storm shelter with ICF. In 2010, Action Builders built the Showcase Home for the Huntsville/Madison County Builders Association. This home was the first Showcase Home in North Alabama to be certified as a SILVER LEVEL GREEN HOME by the NAHB Research Center and it also achieved an Energy Star rating.

Along with its "green" focus, Action Builders turns each client’s custom home dreams into a masterpiece. "Our homes feature state-of-the-art amenities and technology, including multi-room audio, structured wiring, security systems, glamour kitchens, luxurious master baths, home theaters, and outdoor kitchens and courtyards," Mark states.

Daniels Photography

Preserving Moments that People Can Enjoy Forever

Since 2002, Owners Gary and Pat Patterson of Daniels Photography have been helping people preserve moments they can enjoy forever. Located in New Market, Daniels Photography offers 3-½ acres of woodland paths, wildflower fields, rock beds, a bubbling waterfall, and also offer an indoor studio. "We pride ourselves on service in a relaxed atmosphere, taking care of all our customers’ needs," Pat says.

Gary and Pat first got started after taking family photos on a trip to the beach and after someone viewed these photos, they were asked to photograph a wedding. Over the next couple of years, Daniels Photography continued its success and built a studio, studied photography, and learned how to network. "From that first wedding photoshoot, we were then asked to do another and so our confidence grew and the rest is history," Pat states.

At Daniels Photography’s site, there are many manicured and rustic landscapes on its grounds that use nature’s beauty as the backdrop for each customer’s photos. In addition, its indoor studio provides a natural light option and there are separate dressing rooms with changing table.

Pat and Gary focus on giving their customers the best in customer service and photography. "Our mission is to get that great photo and preserving precious moments that people can enjoy forever," Pat explains. "We work hard to get to know our clients, so that we know what they are looking for in a great photo. Sometimes, the best photo is the one we capture when they are not posing. We’re friendly and fun, and we’ll meet the expectations of our customers."

Dear to Pat and Gary’s heart is taking care of animals. They are involved with two no-kill shelters; The Ark and The Greater Huntsville Humane Society. And they are most proud of helping raise money for pet rescue and adoptions.

Green Thumb Garden Consulting & Design, LLC

Putting ‘Green’ Gardening to Use For You

Owner Denise Woodring of Green Thumb Garden Consulting & Design puts "green" gardening to work for your yard and gardens. With more than 20 years of expertise, Denise brings clients in the Tennessee Valley a variety of services including Rain Garden Design, Traditional Landscape Design, Edible Landscape Design, Garden Consultations, Plant Identification, Garden Profile and Care Plan, Gardener Training, Plant Selection, and Project Oversight. "I love gardening and enjoy helping people improve their gardens and yards and I’m a Virginia Master Gardener," Denise explains.

Denise is a licensed landscape designer and garden consultant in Alabama. One of her unique services is designing Rain Water Harvesting Systems. She’s trained and certified through the American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association to design and install simple to complex systems that put rainwater back to use. "The rain garden is designed to capture rain water from your gutters and yard, and allow the water to be absorbed into the ground instead of draining into the storm drain." Denise says. "The more complex systems are designed to collect water from the roof and store the water for potable and non-potable use. These systems include some type of storage tank. I’m excited to be accredited with this organization and proud to be able to provide this service."

In Green Thumb’s edible landscaping designs, Denise uses trees and plants that can provide more value, such as eating its fruit, along with traditional plants and trees. Another great service is Green Thumb’s garden consultations. Denise provides on-site consultation to help clients improve their yards. Consultations can include recommendations on plant placement, how many plants to plant, specific plants to use, explaining the correct planting method, and collaborating with homeowners to assist in landscape ideas.

Lumpkin Stained Glass

Artistic Stained and Beveled Glass for Your Home, Business, or Church

For more than three decades, Lumpkin Stained Glass has been creating beautiful works of art for your home, business, or church. Lumpkin Stained Glass was founded in 1971 by Wayne Lumpkin, and current owner Patricia Byrd took over in 2004. With more than 30 years of expertise in the stained glass industry, Patricia brings a wealth of knowledge into her designs for her clients.

The most common types of leaded glass are stained and beveled glass. Stained glass uses a mosaic of glass pieces to produce colorful arrays of patterns. Beveled glass contains clear, bevel-edged plate glass arranged in an equally artistic pattern, but contains no color. As skilled craftsmen, Lumpkin Stained Glass takes pride in every window it designs and constructs, and offers that same dedication in repairs and replacements. The team of professionals listens to each client’s wishes and produces an artistic piece that adds beauty and value. Stained glass has graced the window openings of structures for hundreds of years,” Patricia explains. “Modern equipment makes cutting and shaping the pieces an easier task, but the basic assembly has remained time honored and unchanged. It’s rewarding to me to work with clients and create something that’s been done the same way for hundreds of years. I’m pleased to be able to carry on a lost art and my mission is to keep it going.”

In addition to stained glass works of art, the company also carries hobby supplies. Not only do its unique products set Lumpkin Stained Glass apart, but also its solid reputation. “Our quality of work speaks for itself and each of our windows are truly unique,” Patricia states.

Lumpkin Stained Glass is a member of the Huntsville/Madison County Homebuilders Association, provides its services to all across the Southeastern United States, and its works have been featured in the Stained Glass Quarterly.

Miche Bag Of Alabama

Change Styles from the Outside In

Miche Bag of Alabama Owner Peggy Cooper started her company after seeing her friend’s Miche Bag. "I fell in love with the concept, the versatility of changing the look of the bag with 40 different covers and surprised at the quality for a reasonably priced handbag," Peggy states. "Miche Bag was born by being able to change the outside of a bag without removing the contents."

Originally, Miche Bag was founded by Michelle Romero after she soiled her favorite handbag and didn’t want to throw it away. She tore it apart and made a cover, super glued the lining, and sewed snaps on the base bag and the cover. Cooper’s business started in December 2008 after talking with her friend about becoming a sales representative as there weren’t any in Alabama. After careful thought, Peggy took a leap of faith and soon received the Miche Bag products and threw parties.

Every party led her to someone wanting to be a sales representative after they saw that the bags sold themselves. In the next couple of months, Miche Bag will be transitioning into a party plan or individual sale multi-level business model. "We’re building teams now on this ground-floor opportunity," Peggy says. "Miche Bag will also be known as Miche when this transition takes place because we’ll have a wide variety of products, such as Miche Boutique, Miche Candy (jewels), and the Miche Man products."

Currently there are four bag sizes; Petite, Classic, Demi, and Prima. There are at least two new shells introduced each month for all four sized bags. In addition, Miche Bag donated more than $750,000 to cancer research last year on the shells named, "Hope".

Tommy's Pizza

Authentic New York Style Pizza

Tommy’s Pizza is now open in South Huntsville. After three-and-a-half, successful years of owning the premier Tommy’s Pizza at Bridge Street Town Centre, Tommy & Christy Bergin are ecstatic to be opening a second pizzeria located on the corner of Airport Rd. and Whitesburg Dr. next to Publix. Tommy states, "I look forward to making Tommy’s Pizza the South Huntsville hangout for families, teams, and friends."

This new location is three times as large as the first and contains a party room. The décor welcomes guests with an antique brick wall that opens into the main seating area, which is decorated with images of New York and features an "excavation wall" of pizza tools. A key feature of the pizzeria is the large glass viewing area to watch pizza dough being tossed and pizzas being made. Another feature is the use of reclaimed and recycled products. A local glass recycling company constructed the countertop from recycled glass chips to give it the unique color and eye-catching texture. "And we are using refurbished ovens and refinished tables purchased from local sources," Tommy says.

From the rich and savory White Pizza to the spicy Buffalo Chicken Pizza to the fully loaded Arsenal, all of Tommy’s mouth-watering creations are available by the slice or as 21" whole pizza pies. All ingredients are cut fresh and prepped in-house. Tommy’s Pizza also offers pasta dishes, all of which are made with Tommy’s homemade, personal recipe marinara sauce. The menu will continue to feature these family favorites, made with the freshest, finest ingredients. Tommy’s is excited to have added draft beers to the new location’s beer and wine selections.

Tommy’s Pizza delivers the authentic taste of New York from both locations. Tommy notes, "We are thrilled about expanding our delivery, pick-up and catering services to local businesses, hospitals and neighborhoods in the greater Huntsville area".

HEALTH SECTION....

Healthy Adolescent & Pediatric Physicians Inc.

Providing Pediatric Care for HAPPI Patients

Healthy Adolescent Pediatric Physicians Inc. (HAPPI) focuses on providing general pediatric care for patients ages birth to 18 that makes them "HAPPI" patients. Dr. Angelique Andrew and her husband, Raymond, who is the Director of Operations and Marketing, opened the practice in June 2010. "We saw a need for more pediatric services in Huntsville and with us not being completely satisfied with our positions, we decided to pull our money out of savings and go for broke with our own practice," Raymond says. "With having three young children it was hard for Angelique to work hospital shifts. In addition, it was also our goal to provide the highest caliber of care to children in the area."

Originally from Seattle, Dr. Andrews attended undergrad and medical school at the University of Washington. Dr. Andrews completed her residency in Los Angeles, where she was Chief Resident her last year. While there, she learned to speak Spanish and currently offers bilingual services.

HAPPI serves patients from all around the Tennessee Valley. "Our vision is to be able to serve families with children from birth to 18 in Huntsville and surrounding areas," Raymond states. "Currently, we have patients from all over the Tennessee Valley, such as Albertville, Decatur, Gurley, the state of Tennessee…they come from all four corners."

Dr. Andrews recalls being on the receiving end of medicine and remembers that while caring for her patients. "As a child with asthma, I remember being on the receiving end of medicine," Angelique states. "Also, I’ve been on the other side as a mother. My youngest child had meningitis at three weeks of age. It taught me a lot more empathy for my patients. Unless you’ve been in a situation where your child is in the hospital, and you want your test results right now, you can’t really know what they’re feeling. I try to make sure my patients understand their illness.

HAPPI is a safe, happy environment for children of all ages. Everyone on the staff prides themself on treating patients as if they were their own children. "You’ll find the highest quality of medical care from compassionate people here at HAPPI," Angelique says.

The practice offers a wide range of pediatric services, including well-child examinations, immunizations, treatment for illness and injury, sports physicals, and more. In addition, HAPPI provides special treatments such as adolescent gynecologic care and suturing for minor injuries. The office has separate waiting areas for sick and well children and both have age appropriate toys and reading books that children will enjoy. "We do everything we can to accommodate sick children the same day," Raymond explains. "We allow walk-ins for sick/urgent appointments. However, we prefer you call ahead to schedule when possible. For routine visits, please call to schedule these and allow at least one business day to be accommodated." Angelique concludes, "We consider it an honor and a privilege to look after your little one."

HAPPI accepts most major health insurance plans including All Kids, Tricare, Aetna, United Health Care, and Medicaid.

HCP is a certified center for LipoLite™ bodysculpting and smoothing of cellulite via third-generation Velashape-2™. With its liposculpture services, HCP provides LipoLite laser lipolysis, a variant of liposuction that’s safer, faster, and more comfortable than previous techniques, often allowing travel or return to work the next day. In this technique, laser melting of the fat is combined with skin tightening. A few things that set it apart from traditional liposuction are LipoLite leads to skin tightening, less bruising in the treated area, and it doesn’t have the risks associated with general anesthesia. "It can handle the sagging skin pockets that liposuction leaves behind, and is even better when done at the same time as liposuction," Dr. Gross states.

He continues, "LipoLite can beautifully reshape how you feel about your body with fat reduction or recontouring in the face, neck, arm, back, bra line, belly, thigh, and buttocks. Large bulges or smaller, stubborn areas that are resistant to diet and exercise can be treated with the latest FDA-approved advancement in liposuction. This is the new evolution in how laser technology is being used to help people look and feel their best."

HCP’s vein treatments help patients with tired legs, swelling, spider veins, and abnormal leg veins. Dr. Gross uses a surface laser, intense pulsed light, and sclerotherapy for spider, cluster, and feeder veins. He’s performed more than 3,000 closure procedures, including both VNUS RF and laser EVLT. "The closure procedure is safe and effective, and we have the latest technology," Dr. Gross explains. "Underlying veins with leaking valves are the cause of the surface veins. They’re identified with ultrasound and treated with closure catheter devices directed by live ultrasound images. This is done with local numbing and mild or no sedation."

Vein treatments at HCP are customized to the individual patient’s needs. Office Manager Caroline Torello states, "Dr. Gross has treated thousands of patients. Although many clinics and offices are now treating veins, Dr. Gross has the full range of vascular hospital privileges at both major hospitals in Huntsville and a complete diagnostic and treatment facility in his office. Also, one doctor determines the customized treatment needed and carries it out, not multiple technicians and staff."

Another procedure HCP offers is Matrix RF, a new way to rejuvenate and correct skin imperfections. "Unlike diffuse laser techniques, a matrix of tiny, closely packed RF pulses delivers controlled energy to the deep skin layers for scars, texture, facial skin laxity, color spots, and wrinkles with little to no downtime," Dr. Gross states. "Sometimes this is combined into programs featuring facial volume fillers and lip enhancement. We’re able to treat those who are resistant to laser or darker skin types with the superior Matrix RF."

Huntsville Hospital Medical Park at Hampton Cove

Serving the Eastern Portion of Madison County

Huntsville Hospital’s Medical Park at Hampton Cove provides the eastern portion of Madison County with primary care, x-ray, laboratory, and physical therapy services. "This new facility in Hampton Cove is part of our mission to service the community with quality care," Director of Marketing Cheryl Davis says.

The facility, located at the corner of Sutton and Taylor Roads, is unique in that it houses a variety of services in one location. On the first floor is the primary care physician’s office with Drs. Daniel Burnes and James Morrison at the helm. On the second floor are the x-ray, laboratory, and physical therapy services. "What’s great about this facility is that there are no appointments necessary for the primary care, x-ray, and laboratory services," Davis explains. "For example, if you wake up and are not feeling well, you can stop in either before or after work, or if the kids are sick after you pick them up from school, you can simply stay close to home and get the medical assistance you need with our extended hours. In addition, we are open on Saturdays and you can either schedule an appointment or walk in. These convenient times are perfect for busy families."

The general practice provides top-quality care for all stages of life…from infancy through the later years. Drs. Burnes and Morrison focus on providing good medicine reminiscent of times past. What’s unique is this practice model allows walk-ins and established visits for preventative care offering patients many benefits and flexibility. "With our affiliation comes flexibility," Morrison comments. "We’re on the Huntsville Hospital network and this allows us to see imaging and lab results, whether performed upstairs at our office or at Huntsville Hospital. We read the results right here in our office."

In continuation of its mission to serve its patients, the Hampton Cove facility is the third Huntsville Hospital affiliate location in the County for physical therapy needs. The office is staffed with licensed Physical Therapists, such as Physical Therapist Darlene Dailey. "I enjoy working at Hampton Cove because it’s a small, intimate setting and I’m able to get to know my patients on a personal level," Darlene states.

The imaging services at Hampton Cove feature all digital x-rays that are interpreted by board certified radiologist from Radiology of Huntsville. In addition to imaging services, Hampton Cove also offers lab services. Routine lab work can be performed with a physician order and no appointment is necessary.

Huntsville Hospital was proud to name the medical park in honor of Russell Brown. Brown served on the Health Care Authority Board from 2001 until his death in April 2010. A longtime Huntsville business and community leader, Brown was instrumental in many major projects at the hospital in the past decade.

Huntsville Hospital Physician Care at Hampton Cove is currently accepting new patients and most insurance is accepted.

"The lenses are only worn at night and clear vision is achieved with no daytime glasses or contacts. It’s the ideal alternative to LASIK."

Another of Innovative EyeCare’s leading-edge services is ChromaGen™. Dr. Teichmiller is the first doctor in Alabama to be certified to provide these lenses to patients. Compassionate Therapy…Complete Care

At Mandeville Physical Therapy & Wellness, patients will find compassionate therapy and complete care. Located in Huntsville, Owner Matt Mandeville is living his dream of owning his own facility and helping people in his hometown. Matt’s goal of opening this facility has come true after 13 years of experience in the physical therapy field. Matt explains, "I'm very excited to open Mandeville Physical Therapy & Wellness here in southeast Huntsville. Our mission is to provide wellness and nutrition information throughout the local community through the use of therapy, education, and personal support. We provide ‘close-to-home’ compassionate treatment with care to the local community."

Matt is a graduate of Grissom High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Auburn University in Exercise Physiology. After graduating from physical therapy school in Mobile, Matt and his wife moved back to the Huntsville/Madison County area to raise their two children. Matt’s expertise comes from working in a small, private clinic followed by a successful period at Huntsville’s largest hospital as the director of physical therapy at Huntsville’s largest orthopedic group. "I enjoyed working at the hospital, but I missed working in a small physical therapy facility where you can really get to know each and every patient being treated," Matt says. "At Mandeville Physical Therapy & Wellness we strive to give each patient the best in quality and personal care."

As part of its goal to provide compassionate treatment and complete care to the community, Mandeville Physical Therapy & Wellness focuses on providing the latest equipment for the best-quality service for its patients. The practice offers the Alter G Treadmill and it is the only physical therapy center north of Birmingham to offer this unique treatment apparatus. This specially designed treadmill, created by NASA, utilizes anti-gravity technology to create weightlessness and alleviate pain and pressure on joints and muscles. The Alter G can absorb up to 80% of one’s body weight. One user described her lightness as "running on air".

The Alter G is particularly beneficial to athletes, those interested in weight loss, and patients rehabilitating from surgeries on hips, knees or ankles. The machine is also safe and effective for prosthetics patients. Using the machine is very simple: the user puts on a type of belt and steps onto the treadmill; the user is then zipped into the "cage", which is an enclosed plastic box; and this cage is inflated to the level at which the user feels "pain-free." The user is then able to run or walk like normal but without the strain or pain.

In addition to the best in equipment, Mandeville Physical Therapy & Wellness offers wellness and nutrition seminars. "Our mission is to provide wellness and nutrition to the local community through the use of physical therapy, education, and personal support," Matt states. "These classes are free and open to the public on Tuesday evenings from 7:45pm to 8:45pm. We invite everyone to come and learn about weight loss, weight gain, energy, sports nutrition, and more!"

Mandeville Physical Therapy & Wellness is providing exceptional quality in service and care!

Millar Chiropractic Clinic (COVER)

Millar’s Got Your Back

Dr. Greg Millar, DC CCEP states, "It all started in that little house in Decatur, and with God’s grace, Millar Chiropractic Clinic has grown into one of the largest group chiropractic practices in Alabama. With four chiropractic offices and one multidiscipline disc treatment center, Millar Chiropractic Clinic is ready to try to get you out of pain."

During its tenure, Millar Chiropractic has been nominated and selected as #1 Best in Business, Huntsville Chiropractor, for the past two years. Dr. Millar was also personally ranked first on the Top 10 list of Huntsville Chiropractors by www.ratemds.com. "There are some really good chiropractors on the list and I am honored to just be listed," Dr. Millar says.

Dr. Millar, originally from Cullman, was raised on his grandfather’s farm. Dr. Millar says, "In those days there was plenty of work to go around for everyone. We didn’t know we didn’t have any money. We just did the best with what we had." Dr. Millar’s father, Hudson Millar, purchased the local Cullman radio station and then the Cullman Times. As the family did well, they moved off the farm, but kept that working spirit.

Dr. Millar was offered a scholarship to prep school at Georgia Military Academy and he went on to attend college at Georgia Tech to be an engineer so he could join the family broadcasting business. After earning his First-class FCC engineering license, he became chief engineer for his family’s stations. Later, he graduated from Barry University, with a Bachelor’s degree, left the family business, and went into banking. Then in 1990, Dr. Millar’s career changed with an accident. Dr. Millar says, "I was in pain every day. Nothing helped. After two back surgeries and talk of another, I had enough. Traditional medicine had failed me."

The thought of years of endless pain medicines and epidurals drove me to look for other answers. "My brother was a chiropractor in Rainbow City and I remember telling him that I needed a real doctor, not a chiropractor," Dr. Millar recalls. "I was scared of chiropractors. I didn’t know what they did, I was just scared. My medical doctor said, ‘NO Way’. I was an eight or nine in pain on a scale of 10 every day. I had nothing else to lose."

Laughing, he adds, "No, I did not hear the angels sing with the first adjustment. But after several weeks of daily care, I felt better. My pain was going down for the first time. After a month of three-times-a-week care, I was finally a five out of 10 in pain. The next month I was a three out of 10. This stuff worked and I wanted to know why. I also knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I wanted to help others get out of pain without the use of drugs."

Dr. Millar attended Life University, College of Chiropractic in Atlanta. He was an honor student and was asked to serve on many prestigious committees, such as the World Congress of Chiropractic Students, World Federation of Chiropractic, and Student ACA. After graduation, he kept taking post graduate courses in Neurology, Orthopedics, Radiology, Trauma Accidents, and techniques like Activator and CBP. After completing the required course of study, he passed the Certified Chiropractic Extremities Practitioner exam and received his designation, CCEP.

Returning to his roots, Dr. Millar opened the first Millar Chiropractic Clinic in Decatur in 1997. "We started on a shoe string budget," Dr. Millar comments. "But again with God’s grace the patients came and were helped. They sent their friends and neighbors and they were helped."

In 1998, Dr. Millar was one of the first chiropractors to introduce Decompression Traction to the Tennessee valley. One year later, he was contacted by Channel 31 WAAY-TV about doing a 30-minute weekly medical talk show. The show "MedLine" was born. With the sale of the station the name of the show was changed to its present MedCall. Dr. Millar did the show nearly every Saturday night for 10 years. Dr Millar is famous for saying, "A doctorate degree gives you the right to an opinion, it doesn’t make your opinion right." Also, Dr. Millar did medical comment on the WAAY-TV’s morning news with Anchor Greg Screws. Today, Dr. Millar is seen every Tuesday at 11:30 am for "BackTalk."

In 2003, Drs. Tom Spurlock and Mark Hadley, head of UAB’s Neurosurgery Department contacted Dr. Millar with an idea of integrating chiropractic care into its program. "They needed some chiropractic offices around Alabama to work with UAB and they selected Millar Chiropractic along with a few others," Dr. Millar says.

Drs. Spurlock and Hadley created spine symposiums at UAB to help teach chiropractors from around the state. Dr. Millar attended and worked closely with Drs. Spurlock and Hadley. In 2007, the Department, through the UAB North Outreach Clinic and Millar Chiropractic, agreed to share office space in Decatur to see patients together. Also in 2007, Dr. Millar started the "BackTalk" show every Tuesday on WAAY-TV at 11:30am, a weekly call-in talk show answering your questions live on the air.

Today, Millar Chiropractic has grown to have offices in Madison, downtown Huntsville, Jones Valley, and Decatur. Plus, Millar Chiropractic offers the Millar Disc Treatment Center in downtown Huntsville. "The great news is that since your records are electronic, you can see any doctor at any office, so if you work one place and live another…no problem," Dr. Millar states.

Dr. Millar has handpicked four chiropractors to work with him at Millar Chiropractic. Dr. Jack Langston DC, has 25-plus years’ experience and is the senior Millar chiropractor at the Decatur office. Dr. Adam Shafran has 19 years’ experience and is the Senior Millar Chiropractor at the Huntsville clinic. Dr. Marie Krause, with 14 years’ experience, works at Huntsville and Madison facilities. Lastly, Dr. Jamie Bunis, DC has 6 years’ experience and is the Senior Doctor at Jones Valley. Dr. Millar sees patients in Madison, Huntsville, Jones Valley, and Decatur by appointment.

NONPROFIT STORIES....

Boxes to Baghdad

A Box of Hope

Sending gift boxes to U.S. troops stationed outside the United States, Boxes to Baghdad is a local not-for-profit organization started by Mary Conway and her group MaddMotherMary’s. These boxes are sent to soldiers in mostly combat zones to let them know that their hard work and sacrifice is appreciated. This nonprofit organization has been sending boxes weekly to troops for more than eight years. "It’s become a ministry", Mary explains. "We have to show our soldiers that we support them."

The list of servicemen and women is constantly changing and names are obtained by referral only. All four branches of the service have received boxes over the years. In response to the gifts, Boxes to Baghdad has heard back from both soldiers and their superior officers, expressing gratitude for the contact, support, and fun trinkets.

Inside the #7 USPS Priority boxes are essentials, wished-for items, treats, and toys, such as dominoes, Slinkies, and Rubik’s Cubes. The boxes are lined with colored tissue paper and completed with encouraging stickers so when the box is opened, the soldier gets a splash of color and a good laugh before seeing all the goodies.

Boxes to Baghdad operates primarily on donations and is currently supported by networking, word-of-mouth, a Bible study group, the American Society of Women Accountants, and the Lenten Cross/Angel Tree program at Good Shepherd Catholic Parish. The constant need within this ministry is for goodies to fill the boxes, as well as money to pay for postage. Donations are gratefully accepted.

Support a Soldier with a Box of Joy!

Home Builders Association

The 2011 Showcase Home, an annual project of the Huntsville/Madison Builders Association, is located at 120 Somer Creek Lane in Somerset in Northeast Madison County. The construction manger is Chip Powers of Chip Powers Homes LLC. Through contributions, either in products or services of many Association members, Chip and the Chip Powers Homes team were able to build this beautiful, but functional home.

The house, called "The Katelyn", is one of the floor plans featured in Somerset. This traditional home offers an open floor plan with formal dining room, large family room, and a downstairs master suite. Upstairs features two additional bedrooms and a bonus/media room. The covered front and back porches extend the living space outdoors allowing the homeowners to spend more leisure time outside. Its warm colors, extensive trim and moldings, hardwood flooring, granite and lighting turn this "house" into a "home".

In the Somerset community, homes are predominantly four-sided brick exteriors, with stainless steel GE appliances, professionally landscaped yards, and finished two-car garages with garage door openers. Amenities include sidewalks, underground utilities, pool with a cabana, and a community park with a playground for children. Located close to Highway 72, Somerset is only minutes away from downtown Huntsville, restaurants, shopping, Redstone Arsena, and Research Park.

The Showcase Home will be featured in the 2011 Parade of HomesSM on October 22-23 and 29-30. It will be open for viewing between 1:00 – 5:00pm. Contact the Huntsville/Madison County Builders Association at (256) 536-2602 for further information or visit the web site listed below.

Huntsville Police Citizens Foundation

Police Officers Memorial

The Huntsville Police Citizens Foundation (HPCF) is a nonprofit organization that supports the Huntsville Police Department (HPD) and was started after the death of Huntsville Police Officer Daniel Golden in 2005. This organization is a citizen and community organization dedicated to honoring and supporting HPD’s officers who have fallen in the line of duty. Chairperson of this nonprofit foundation, Mike Fees, says, "Over the past six years, HPCF has focused on the construction of the Police Officers Memorial to publicly recognize the support and often the ultimate sacrifice of our public safety servants. Special thanks go to Greg Bragg of Consolidated Construction for donating his company’s time, resources, and services in managing the construction of this project. HPCF has earned money in many ways and received support from many local corporations, but the majority of our funding comes from the community and individual donors."

The organization’s secondary purpose is to serve as a safety net of financial support for the families of fallen officers. "There are state and federal programs that assist the families, but HPCF serves to bridge the gap between an officer’s passing and when those programs begin to provide for the family," Fees comments.

The Police Officers Memorial, located at [ADDRESS, please!] Wheeler Avenue in front of Huntsville’s Public Safety building, was dedicated in September. The memorial artwork was developed locally by Meridian Arts. The center bronze statuary features an officer kneeling in grief, holding a flag, and a second officer with his hand on the first officer’s shoulder in grieving consolation. The project is described as "breathtaking" by Fees.

"On behalf of the HPCF and the officers of the HPD, I thank all the corporate and citizen contributors, who have made this project happen," Fees says. "I also extend my gratitude for donations of every size, from corporate checks to children’s piggy bank savings. There is no way to express my appreciation in mere words, but it is there."

Madison City's Family of the Year 2011

The Trulock Family

On June 13, 2011 at the Madison City Council meeting, Troy, Dana, Whitney, and Matt Trulock were honored to be named Madison City’s "Family of the Year 2011". The family was nominated by the public as part of an annual Madison community recognition program.

All of the Trulock family members are involved in the community. They’re active members of Asbury United Methodist Church, founding members of the Hogan Family YMCA, and are part of numerous church, and school clubs. Troy and Dana remain active in their kids’ sports programs, with Troy coaching more than 60 of their teams. Troy and Dana continue to support their schools by being active in Liberty Middle School and Bob Jones High School’s PTA and Booster Clubs. In addition, Troy was selected by Madison City Council to be a member of the Madison Recreation Board.

Their commitment to the community has been passed down to Whitney and Matt. The children are involved in Church activities, and both are graduates of the Huntsville/Madison County Leadership Youth Challenge Program. Whitney, a recent Bob Jones graduate, was a member of the Chemistry Club, Spanish Club, captain of her school’s girls soccer team, and worked with the YMCA’s youth advisory committee. Matt was captain of the Liberty Middle School’s boys soccer team, member of the Spanish Club, and is currently on the Bob Jones football and soccer teams.

According to Dana "We are proud to be a part of our Madison and Tennessee Valley communities, and we believe our closeness as a family can be attributed to the quality of life in Madison." According to Troy, "the military may have brought us into town, but it was Madison’s people, churches, schools, sports, and quality of life that kept us here."

Madison Junior Chamber

A Civic Organization for Young Professionals

The Madison Junior Chamber, a local chapter of the United States Junior Chamber, was formed in Madison in the summer of 2011 by a group of local young professionals looking to make an impact in the community while gaining valuable leadership skills. The Madison Junior Chamber (Jaycees) is a civic organization for young professionals aged 21-40 that focuses on equipping its members with the tools they need to build the bridges of success for themselves in the areas of business development, management skills, individual training, and community service.

Recently, the Jaycees have volunteered in the tornado relief effort, participated in Relay for Life, and currently are planning the third annual "Yuri’s Night" at the Davidson Center. Yuri’s Night is a worldwide space party, taking place in April 2012, celebrating the humanities achievements in space. Last year’s event was well attended with more than 750 costumed attendees dressed as astronauts, Star Trek cast members, and Sci-Fi characters. 100% of the proceeds from Yuri’s night will go to support CAJA of Madison County. The Jaycees are currently seeking sponsors for this year’s event and expect it to continue to grow into one of the area’s premiere social events.

The Madison Jaycees are always looking for opportunities to serve Madison. "We really want to become a force of good in the community," says Ryan Davis, President and founding member of the Madison Jaycees. "We look forward to planning future events and are open to suggestions from the Madison community."

The Jaycees welcome any questions regarding membership, volunteer opportunities, or sponsorship opportunities.

Relocates to Downtown Huntsville for Better Access to Veterans Benefits and Services.

Since being founded in 2006, Still Serving Veterans (SSV) has become a nationally recognized center of excellence for helping Veterans assess their medical, vocational, and counseling needs, and then connecting them with federal, state, and local support services. This year, SSV received its National/International Combined Federal Campaign Affiliation #12606 and was recognized for serving Veterans throughout the United States.

SSV's Mission is to empower Veterans, wounded warriors, and their families as they transition into post military lives through accessing VA benefits, career counseling, and workforce development and training. "We are shaping the lives of Veterans and providing the resources for those that served our great nation," says Sheila McFerran, Director/Program Development with SSV. "Our Veterans have done noble things in treacherous places for our freedom and it is our duty to provide them with the quality of life they have earned."

Tennessee Valley Barter Exchange

Third-party Business Trading

What’s a way for local business owners to save their cash flow? It’s third-party trading through the Tennessee Valley Barter Exchange. Owner Susan Voiers established the Tennessee Valley Barter Exchange in October 2010. "I was interested in finding a way to help businesses increase customers and obtain the things they needed, so I started researching exchanges in other areas." Susan states. "After researching off and on for more than 10 years, things came together at the right time to launch here."

There are currently more than 400 exchanges across the country, according to Susan. The Exchange is the only locally owned exchange in this area, representing more than 120 members. "In today's economic climate, it's more important than ever for businesses to conserve cash and protect the future of their company," Susan explains.

Susan continues, "With the Exchange, it’s business as usual, just as if you were doing a cash transaction. Pricing is just the same. You receive full value for your product or service. The only difference is our members have agreed to accept an alternative form of tender. When cash is taken out of the equation, people tend to spend more. They view it as ‘found money’, a value for unused space, time or excess inventory that would have otherwise been lost. Exchange tender is viewed by the IRS as legal tender. The Exchange keeps track of transactions and provides 1099s for members. You open an account with us with a $0 balance. As we bring new clients to you and they make purchases, ‘money’ is transferred from their account to yours. You then have that ‘money’ to spend with any member for any item they’re selling through the Exchange. For example, a dentist needs printing, but the printer doesn’t need dental work, so the printer provides the service to the dentist and then the printer can use his trade dollars with another member, kind of a round-robin effect."

The organization is a member of the International Reciprocal Trade Association (IRTA). IRTA’s members agree to uphold the ethical standards set for the industry and all of the Exchange’s members agree to uphold those same standards. Some of the Exchange’s members are represented in this issue, including: Act II Consignment Shoppe, Daniels Photography, Miche Bag of Alabama, Innovative EyeCare, and Green Thumb Garden Consulting and Design.

The organization focuses on finding members what they need. Some member benefits include monthly networking events, business expos, weekly member newsletters, and monthly newsletters to over 1,500 businesses, spotlighting two or three businesses each month as well as ongoing training on how to benefit from third party trading. "Members can use their trade dollars toward a variety of needs. One member purchased hardwood floors, countertops, billboard advertising, a seamstress, a direct mail campaign, catering, office furniture and more," Susan recalls. "All of these items were bought using Exchange tender instead of cash."

The Tennessee Valley Barter Exchange is a member of the Huntsville/Madison and Madison City Chambers of Commerce, OSBO, and IRTA.

True Grace Foundation

Helping Single Mothers...One Investment at a Time

The True Grace Foundation, Inc. was founded by a single mom who had faced tremendous hardships in her life. According to True Grace, raising children in a single parent household could create a recipe for disaster if there are financial, emotional, physical, or any other issues. True Grace provides alternative ways to the typical "entitlement" mentality and shows single moms how to make positive changes in their unique family design.

With programs designed to fit individual family needs, the True Grace Foundation offers mentoring, financial counseling, car repair, child care, and career counseling. There is one catch, however, and it’s one that not only benefits the single mom, but also benefits the community. If a single mom is on welfare, she must agree to get off of welfare within three months. True Grace believes it can be done and it shows the mother how. True Grace walks with the mom on her journey to providing for she and her children in a dignified way so that she can hold her head up high and be proud of her success.

The Madison County community can help True Grace by donating cars or any items as a tax deductible donation. In turn, True Grace uses these items to support the mothers. Scarlett Drane, founder of True Grace, has "been there and done that" and now wants to show other mothers how they can meet their needs and become whole again. She has been teaching women these secrets for years and will continue to do so with the support of the community and organizations. True Grace is always in need of mentors and donations.
